In connection to the Rushdie controversy, Tim Rutten discusses the interesting issue of how the UN has passed a resolution that sanctions state punishment of those who insult religion, doubtlessly another pants-dropping-and-bend-over move to appease our Islamist friends and fight the scourge of so-called Islamophobia. Maybe it is about time to let the UN fend for itself.

Those Damn Yankees and Their Freedom-Loving Ways

Here is some historical context for last week's colorful performances at the UN. I only hope that a new precedent has not been founded for yet broader purposes, and that future despots will not start promoting their own consumer goods, such as that stylish line of summer wear or custom-made furniture. I think oil is enough, and you don't need a hard sell.

A Funny Thing About That U.N.

The unpredictable factor in this game of brinkmanship is Ahmadinejad. In another defiant move, he laid out a radical vision of an Iranian new world order. The U.N. Security Council is an outdated relic of the post-World War II era and should be abandoned, he said.

That's funny, a lot of Americans have been thinking the same thing about the U.N. in total.

Indeed, when thinking about its World War II origins, one can marvel that France should have been made a permanent, veto-wielding member of the Security Council. I gather it was because we wanted more weight against the Russians and the Chinese, and we thought, all things considered, that the French would be on our side. Now, that's really funny!
