The Shadow Behind Saddam's Death

We have heard a lot of strong criticism over the execution of Saddam, not with the justice of his death, but with the way it was carried out. Mr. Krauthammer writes the best case for this miscarriage in process, as far as my tastes are concerned. He also finds in this failing of the Maliki government another reason why Americans should not be sacrificing more for this regime.

Down with Bush, Up with Saddam!

“Characteristically among most of the world’s intellectual and political classes there seems to have been a good deal more sympathy for Saddam than for the man who toppled him. How terribly uncivilised of the Iraqis to put him to death! So much for democracy, sniffed the sort of people who could barely control their admiration for the recent film about the fictionalised assassination of President Bush.”

-- Gerard Baker for The Times

I just thought this was a nice contrarian point against the Euro-enlightened.

Those Whacky Europeans

European politicians on Monday spoke out against the death sentence for Saddam Hussein.

-- Hassan M. Fattah for The NY Times

You know the French must be behind it, as it smacks of their kind of enlightenment. Yeah, I think a good round of community service would be just the thing for Saddam.

I mock the world, especially the Europeans and the French, but it's so funny and fascinating.

Saddam Twisting in the Breeze

Saddam has been found guilty and is sentenced to hang, hopefully swinging for a very long time before dying. I wonder if the hanging will be televised, or at least YouTubed.

I only hope our elections are not as staged.

Judging Saddam

“Stunning coincidence. The verdict in the long-running trial of Saddam Hussein in Iraq is now due two days before our congressional elections in November. Astounding. How ineffable.”

-- Molly Ivins for CNN.com

I don't know about ineffable, but this is one of the reasons I love to watch politics. Sure, that can seem rather small minded, considering that we are talking about the welfare of peoples, but after a while, you realize that you may as well enjoy the entertainment value of it all - an almost godly perspective.

Besides, the way things are going for the Republicans, Saddam may very well get pronounced not guilty. As I recall, the judge has already decided that Saddam was not a dictator. Did I mention the entertainment value?

Poor Saddam, Misunderstood

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- The chief judge in Saddam Hussein's genocide trial said Thursday that he does not believe Saddam was a dictator.

-- Associated Press

That's going well, isn't it? Iraq is the nightmare that won't end. I can see it now. Saddam is declared as innocent as a lamb, and he sues America for the wrongful toppling of a Third World government. But maybe we could settle and give Iraq back to him. That way, Europe and the UN will no longer bother about atrocities and order will indeed be restored.
