BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- The chief judge in Saddam Hussein's genocide trial said Thursday that he does not believe Saddam was a dictator.

That's going well, isn't it? Iraq is the nightmare that won't end. I can see it now. Saddam is declared as innocent as a lamb, and he sues America for the wrongful toppling of a Third World government. But maybe we could settle and give Iraq back to him. That way, Europe and the UN will no longer bother about atrocities and order will indeed be restored.

Today it is usually seen as synonymous with despot, tyrant and/or dictator, though each of these terms originally had a separate and distinct meaning (see their respective articles).
Autocracy is not synonymous with totalitarianism, as this concept was precisely forged to distinguish modern regimes that appeared in the 1930s from traditional dictatorships. It also isn't synonymous with military dictatorship, as these often take the form of "collective presidencies" (see the South-American juntas). However, an autocracy may be totalitarian or be a military dictatorship.
Although I'm being academic...something tells me this comment was not philosophical hair-splitting. lol
