At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.

McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.

...

McCain advisers said they were only somewhat concerned about Ms. Palin’s debating skills compared with those of Mr. Biden, who has served six terms in the Senate, or about his chances of tripping her up. Instead, they say, they wanted Ms. Palin to have opportunities to present Mr. McCain’s positions, rather than spending time talking about her experience or playing defense.

Well, Dubya and Cheney largely stuck to answering question on Fox News; so, I guess Palin isn't exactly setting a new precedent, but it kinda gives you a sinking feeling in your stomach. I thought Dubya lowered the bar.

Really?

You know, I was quite surprised when the GOP pulled off a victory in 2004. If they can pull it off again this time, against such strong & articulate opponents, then... wow!

I mean, seriously, they've got such lame duck candidates this time, it should be a slam-dunk for you fellas right?! Yet, why are so many Dems like you nervous??? Are the GOP strategy guys that good?

America is a very conservative country, which shows more in the electoral college, the race for the presidency. I address this a little in my post this morning. Even after Dubya, it's a tough time from Dems.

Heh, I guess that explains why I had bibles thrust to my face nearly 4 times in the 6 months I was in Kansas! :P

Fabulous folks though - I couldn't walk a few feet without somebody cheerily wishing me "Howya doin?". I really missed that when I came to NY :)

the debates ought to be a huge deal, and normally i'd look forward to them. there's just no question that obama and biden can out debate mccain palin 100% of the time.
but kerry kicked bush's ass, and edwards held his own awfully well against that terrible terrible cheney. so what? apparently the debates don't mean much any more.
if they were wide open i suppose i'd be more interested, but if they're just more scripted vetted sound bite opportunities, i just can't stand to watch.
i'm boycotting.

Watching politics has become increasingly like watching a nasty car wreck, but it does have that same morbid fascination.
