“The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.”

-- Thucydides

That does get to the tragedy of life with beautiful succinctness and precision, doesn't it?

I came across the quote in Ms. Dowd's discussion of the neo-con Straussians this morning and their fascination for classical Greece. In spite of their screwiness over the Iraq War, perhaps overestimating American ruthlessness, some ancient truths really do keep their force.

___ ___ ___

[1730]

Looking back at the Thucydides quote, I see I twisted it in my memory, thinking that it said:

The strong take what they can and the weak take what they must.
I like mine better and think it is perhaps no less true, if more blunt. It has that nasty edge to it: the strong will take your ass, and the weak will take their cock. That sounds like life to me.

"God has spoken to me. I listen to God, and what I've heard is that I'm supposed to devote myself to rebuilding the conservative base of the Republican Party, and I think we shouldn’t be underestimated."

-- Tom DeLay

Maybe he's channeling Jerry Falwell. I just wish God would tell him to fuck off already.

Giuliani's view of power would be dangerous at any time, but especially after two terms of relentless Bush efforts to weaken the constitutional checks and balances that safeguard our liberty.

In 1964, Barry Goldwater declared it "the cause of Republicanism to resist concentrations of power." George W. Bush has forgotten that; Rudy Giuliani rejects it.

LiveJournal, which is owned by San Francisco-based Six Apart, confirmed Wednesday that it deleted around 500 journals this week in hopes of better "protecting children." It said the deletion was prompted by activist groups, including one called Warriors for Innocence that claims to track sites promoting pedophilia, the sexual abuse of minors, and other illegal activities.

... "Our decision here was not based on pure legal issues," countered Six Apart's Berkowitz. "It was based on what community we want to build and what we think is appropriate within that community and what's not. We have an awful broad range of discussions and topics and other things going on in LiveJournal, and we encourage other broad-ranging conversations on all sorts of topics. This was a specific case where we felt there was not a reason (for these journals to stay online)."

-- Declan McCullagh for News.com

I guess this proves it. LJ is Six Apart's bitch. And accepting advertizements was the beginning of the end of freedom of speech. All fantasies and musings must now be politically correct. How fucking boring!

Some people talk about migrating to GreatestJournal or JournalFen or even this site called InsaneJournal, but does anyone know of an AdultJournal, a place where one doesn't have to be limited to the mentality of children?
