Vice President Cheney is apparently taking the likelihood of a Democratic victory next week, along with the likelihood of more serious Congressional investigations, more seriously. A paper-shredding truck was seen heading toward the Cheney compound. Wonkette chides, "You better get crackin’, Dick — that evidence won’t destroy itself!"

Of course, this is Wonkette. If it's all just a joke, it's a pretty good one. It does have that ring of truth. I suppose Cheney may just believe that there is going to be a big upset victory for the Republicans and he just wants to prepare a lot of confetti for the celebrations - a lot of it!

"The Ninth Gate" is airing on the IFC. It still feels deliciously cozy, being pulled into that universe of books. You want to hold the old books yourself and flip through the pages. You can practically smell the fine, aged book paper.

I was going to tape it, but ended up being reminded that I tried that before, learning again that the movie is over two hours. It only occurs to me now that I could have just taped it on SLP or four-hour mode, without really losing anything in the translation. Still, if I ever have the extra money to invest in my modest DVD collection, "The Ninth Gate" is definitely near the top of the list.

Veterans of those arduous classroom campaigns, as well as succeeding generations of students for whom Virgil was never on the reading list, can now turn gratefully to Robert Fagles’s new English translation of “The Aeneid” (Viking), in which that ancient war horse emerges as a work of surpassing beauty, feeling and even relevance, everything that teachers used to say it was.

-- Charles McGrath for The NY Times

It was through Fagles that I came to know "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," loving the former and feeling rather less enamored with the latter. I grew fond of "The Aeneid" through Robert Fitzgerald's translation. It may be time for Monk to turn back to poetry. I am very interested to see what Fagles has wrought.
