"Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are god. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realise that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are gods."

-- Christopher Hitchens

Cat shows? And cats running through an obstacle course? I never would have dreamed of such a thing. Even after reading the article, I am not a believer.

Here is a charming doggy story that I found on my Friends Page, a little something for Christmas week. The world would be a colder place without dogs and cats. I suspect they bring out feelings of love in a lot of people who might not have felt it otherwise. It is too easy for us to feel resentful toward each other, but all our defenses come crashing down when it comes to these four-legged cousins of ours.

_ _ _

One near victim of the cold is now happy and warm and residing in Bessemer [Alabama].

Last Saturday, Gary McLean, a track inspector for CSX Railroad, found and rescued a tiny shivering puppy who'd become frozen to the train tracks.

“Dogs look up to you, cats look down on you. Give me a pig. He just looks
you in the eye and treats you as an equal.”

-- Winston Churchill

Roger Cohen explores the logic and ethics of the way cultures favor some
animals as pets and others for food, particularly in relation to China's
predilection for eating dogs and cats. He was in China, and when in Rome...

The meal didn't set well with him, and it makes me a little sick just reading
about it. Just remind me never to become friends with a cow or a chicken.

It's raining hard now. At least Bo and I were able to take care of our first rounds before there was even a hint that this was going to fall. Always have to love a little good luck.

Though, Bo points out that he could be luckier, referring to this morning's story about how hotels and resorts are becoming more pet friendly for monied vacationers:

In a culture in which dogs and cats have become surrogate children (and grandchildren) and are sometimes better dressed than their owners, a growing number of hotels and resorts have welcomed four-legged guests in recent years, including the Four Seasons, the Ritz-Carlton, the Loews and the Kimpton hotels. But now, several luxury condominiums and private residence clubs are taking pet-friendly policies further by offering services and amenities that rival those meant for humans, including grooming sessions, swim classes, massage treatments (no mere belly-scratch) and even a doggie psychic.
But since I have to go without my Oriental massages, Bo is just going to have to forget about the massage treatments as well as the swim classes. Maybe I'll let him watch some more doggy porn later; I still haven't seen that old Linda Lovelace video.

"When asked to choose between abandoning their pets or their personal safety, many pet owners chose to risk their lives," he said.

The Humane Society of the United States cited a recent Zogby International poll that found that 49 percent of adults say they would refuse to evacuate if they couldn't take their pets with them.

The House of Representatives passes by an overwhelming margin the Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act.
