Carter: Debate, Not a Speech

“In fact, Carter never mentions in his book, or in his speech, that the Palestinians could have had a state in 1938, 1948, 1967 and on several other occasions. Their leaders cared more about destroying Israel than about creating Palestine. That is the core of the conflict. It is Palestinian terror, not Israeli policy, which prevents peace.”
-- Alan Dershowitz for The New York Daily News
Mr. Dershowitz is writing about a speaking engagement at Brandeis University. Jimmy Carter was speaking there as well. I caught some of it on C-SPAN and found it a little disappointing. It was supposed to be a debate on Carter's controversial book, "Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid." Evidently, Carter only wanted to give a little speech and answer a few prescreened questions.
Brandeis University might not have been the most neutral setting, and Dershowitz is a premiere lawyer and law professor, but one does wonder if Carter lacks some confidence in the positions he has staked.
