One just likes that dig at Americans' religiosity, the fundamentalist nature of it. Mr. Kristof is alluding to an old column in which he reported the dismal survey findings about this religiosity, including that quoted above.
In his column today, he is re-visiting the issue of gay marriage, making the oft given argument about the selectivity of Christian fundamentalists in trying to give force to their supposed biblical morality.
