We are coming upon some dramatic elections, and the Bush Administration is struggling with some mind-bending tensions between the message and the political realities. That's right, it's time for some Orwellian fun:

STEPHANOPOULOS: James Baker says that he’s looking for something between “cut and run” and “stay the course.”

BUSH: Well, hey, listen, we’ve never been “stay the course,” George. We have been — we will complete the mission, we will do our job, and help achieve the goal, but we’re constantly adjusting to tactics. Constantly.

ThinkProgress.org draws out the obvious awkwardness behind this change of message, giving numerous instances when "stay the course" was trumpeted by Dubya, instances which may now be flushed down the memory hole. Hey, at least the message has finally reached the top that there is some serious trouble on the ground and deep adjustments are needed. That's the power of democracy and elections for you!

Filling in the story, James Baker, of course, was a principal player in Bush the Elder's Administration, and he played an integral part in securing Dubya's dubious election in 2000, and he is now leading a group to grapple anew with the Iraq problem.

I like to imagine that Dubya finally called his dad and said, "HELP!!" And Baker, pursuant to the father's urging, like a true, old knight, climbs atop his horse and comes riding in.
