Catching a little of C-SPAN, Monk hears about those brave and self-sacrificing types. I think it was about women who volunteered to be nurses near battle zones.
This spurred a Mallway Dialogue. These are imagined discussions with people from his past. One used to be concerned that this was a symptom of mental degeneration. Interestingly, there have been far fewer of these since Monk has taken up blogging.
In this Dialogue, Beverly asks, "How do such stories make you feel?"
Monk knows what she's getting at. How does Monk feel about his own life of craven withdrawal, in contrast to people who even face hazards to make a difference in people's lives?
Monk affects a cavalier shrug and says drolly, "Not everyone is comfortable with the abyss. And some are left to the extremity of making themselves useful."
This draws some heartfelt laughter...
