Monk has given his Saturday over to getting a good start into William Safire's historical novel Scandalmonger. When Monk was reading Mr. Chernow's Alexander Hamilton, he remembered that Safire had penned a novel based on some of the events Chernow wrote of. By the time he finished the biography, Monk's appetite was more than whetted to have another go at it in a more fun fictional approach, while his mind was still vibrant with the characters and situations.
He couldn't have been more delighted when he discovered this morning that the novel opens with Hamilton's affair with Maria Reynolds. Perhaps the writing choice shouldn't have surprised Monk, since this is a juicy and meaty story of those times.
As one expected, Mr. Safire is not the most artistic novelist, being more of a polemicist himself. Yet, his work is more than satisfactory enough for Monk, given the nice historical ground upon which we are traveling.
