You are probably right. But at least people can more easily find a consolation for their loneliness now. Before the Internet, I know I found loneliness to be a lot harder to bear.

I am not saying it is a 'substitute' but a better consolation than what people had before. For example, before the Internet, there was no way that I would be exchanging comments like this with a woman in Russia. I agree that this is not as good as meeting someone at the park and then going out to dinner and a movie together, and then maybe spending the night together, but it is a little something to be able to communicate with people around the globe like this.
