I did once. And I took it straight to the police. Given the amount, and the area where I had found it, it was almost certainly someone's unemployment benefit for the week.
The police were astonished. They didn't expect anyone finding money in that particular area to turn it in. However, they took my name and details, and explained to me that if nobody claimed it within some period of time - six weeks, I think - it would legally become my property. I was even more astonished when nobody did and I was able to go back to the police station and collect it. You'd think the person who lost it would at least have tried reporting the loss to the police.
Also, if I found America, I suspect I would give it back as fast as possible, but that's just me. You know I'm inclined to consider your country uninhabitable due to the climate. ;-)
I'm impressed with your police. I don't know if it's the climate, but I think our policeman would have taken the money as a charitable donation in support of your local police.
