Geraldine Ferraro dies at 75. Our first woman candidate to be on the presidential ticket of a major party. 1984. Walter Mondale’s bid to oust Reagan after one term. I remember it fairly well. We were writing about it in college, and so the election was something of a political awakening for me, never having thought two cents about politics before, and sometimes I kind of wish I kept it that way.
I guess Ferraro was a solid politico, but you cannot say she left a real mark for her thought or leadership. Her selection to fill the vice-presidential slot was arguably something of a stunt, a flash of shiny progressivism, but unfortunately it was the beginning of the era of reactionary conservatism.
I am only sorry to see that Sarah Palin is making more of a name for herself after serving as McCain’s stunt, but then she fits in better with the time, a sort of fascist Barbie doll. Pull the string and she says all the correct right-wing things.
