There's a new social networking site called Path whose big idea seems to be to limit the number of one's friends to 50:
However, this has gotten me to thinking about what I would consider to be an enticing theme for a new social networking site, and I came up with one basic idea: we would get to select from a host of 'hawt people' a few to be blogging friends with. Loosely speaking, they might have to post at least once a day, post pictures once a week, and comment on our posts every once in a while. No porn or nude pics, and any flirtiness would be minimal.
Of course, a guy's guy might lightly punch me on the shoulder and say what I really want are camgirls, where you can even get nudity and maybe some smuttiness if you're a little lucky. Yeah, but they cost quite a bit, too, and I don't think they can be moved to read your innermost thoughts or care about your sage views on the passing news of worldly affairs. I'm just feeling for the next big idea, and it probably has to be pretty clean. And I'm just sort of missing the days when I was actually able to get such e-goodness naturally.
Path calls itself “The Personal Network” because it’s determined to go against the example set by Twitter’s follower model; you are limited to just 50 friends on Path. It chose the 50 number based on the theories of Oxford professor of evolutionary psychology Robin Dunbar, who claims that 150 is the maximum number of social relationships any human can handle. In fact, they call themselves a personal networking site rather than a social networking site, but I cannot say I'm feeling the magic, whatever today's evolutionary psychology has to say. Then again, I didn't think much of Twitter's big concept of limiting users' posts to 140 characters. And I've never been a good judge of cool anyway.
