Lonely people have a natural affinity for the internet. It's always there waiting, patient, flexible, suitable for every mood....
What do lonely people desire? Companionship. Love. Recognition. Entertainment. Camaraderie. Distraction.

A danger of the internet would be if we begin to meet those needs without feeling there has to be another person in the room.

Who knew Roger Ebert had this much soul? This is the film critic guy, I think.
As nice a consolation as the Internet can be, I doubt anyone has to worry that we will overlook the soul-splitting thrill of another live person, at least one we feel at least a little crushy about and who feels crushy about us. The Internet is a half-measure at best, a place where we may happily exchange wits but not bodily fluids with others. This half-measure is just better than only having a porn tape in the VCR and Dickens or Dostoevsky on the nightstand. Yeah, I’m so glad the nineties ended and we were able to join in the Internet Age.
