The loss of Farrah Fawcett was big news. The loss of Michael Jackson today broke LJ! I'm actually a little surprised by how deeply felt is the mourning, as I was afraid all the suggestion of child molestation might have tarnished his legacy. Now it seems that the legal allegations are dubious, listening to the media. It's all love. I just caught Al Sharpton pouncing hard on how people are now mourning and celebratiing the superstar who only a few hours ago would be badmouthing him. The culture is bigger than the individual, and the art can overshadow the man.

There will probably be more. Meanwhile, one of my favorite songs that I like to listen to and which is perhaps one of his lesser played ones is "The Way You Make Me Feel".

R.I.P MJ

For most of us, Michael Jackson was the 1st introduction into US pop music/culture, while we were growing up. He will be sorely missed around the world :-(

MJ as the face of America... that could be confusing and perhaps troubling, but you did say pop culture, lol.

He definitely left his mark and helped to shape the culture. I don't think he was as big and influential as Elvis, but he was one of our giants.

Poor chap. He seemed astonishingly mixed up, from what little I know of him. I hope he was able to be his true self at the end.

Michael Jackson's true self? That is a striking notion. I wonder if there was such a thing. I was looking at some old videos when he was a small boy leading his family's band, and I think he was always a show and always a celebrity. That probably was a problem.
