Today is Unintended Consequences Day at the Times. Here are a couple of stories of what can happen when good people try to do good things in an often harsh world.

How trying to protect trees can backfire

I guess you learn and keep trying. Virtue never comes easy. It is certainly easier to be cynical and to do nothing. Maybe this is how God tests your mettle. I'll probably stick to blogging, myself.

I don't know dude. Being a decent human being may be hopeless or impractical in this world, but I adore folks who try their best to stick to their principles & live a decent life regardless of it's apparent stupidity.

There's something about people chasing after doomed causes that touches me. Maybe that explains why Kiwi's my hero too, heh.

a few of us have been pissing in the wind re:horse slaughter for a while now. friends are horrified that i've been against the slaughter bill, but i've been asking 'what will happen then to unwanted horses?' if someone isn't going to pay to keep their old/lame/vicious/injured horse, they're surely not going to pay to euthanize it kindly. i'd much rather see the energy and legislation work toward making slaughterhouses more ethical and humane than just say 'NO MORE HORSES CAN BE KILLED!!!' well, guess what folks, horses die and dogs have to eat. euthanasia is, imo, the only ethical option for a pet or companion horse but it's no good just turning a blind eye to all the unwanteds, and you're not making their ends any 'nicer' by encouraging the unethical to ship them to mexico, or simply shrug and starve them to death.
it's the flavor of liberalism and feel-goodism that makes me nut up. it might sound so nice, 'stop killing the pet ponies.' hell, i own and cry when i read marguerite henry's 'mustang, wild spirit of the west'. but that doesn't mean that shutting down the slaughter houses means all ponies have a happy ending.
