monk222: (Noir Detective)

I heard this interesting scrap of rumor, watching cable news tonight. Bush has been in the Middle East, and the Saudis supposedly told him that if the American troops are pulled out of Iraq, the Saudis will go in to take care of business against the rising Shia. Well, I could not help thinking that this might not be such a bad deal, after all. With the Sunnis and Shia fighting and killing each other, they may be too busy to worry about carrying out jihadic terrorism against the West. And then, years later, we can see where we are. But this does sound a wee bit optimistic.

What is really painful, though, is that even if this could be true, Bush would still mess it up, going by his statements that he has no intention to leave Iraq. Which means that the Sunnis and Shia get a real sweet deal, carrying out their civil war while killing Americans caught in the middle for a nice bonus.

well, that's just what it needs! a strong hand to go in, stop any 'arisings' by shia, make sure the sunnis know who's in charge and are appropriately grateful and do whatever atrocities are demanded of 'em to keep the peace, and maintain order with an iron fist.
oh yeah. there WAS one of those already.
funny. after all the attempts to link iraq to 9-11, the nation that produced the terrorists who WERE responsible for 9-11 is getting ready to move in and take over for us.
heh.

I don't think this would be done as a favor to us, as much as for their own interests. The Saudis probably resent us for making the Shia a stronger force and not raising an American iron fist against them. Though, I think this is mostly loose talk filling air time, but I thought it was a fascinating notion.

oh i certainly don't think they are doing us any favors at all, and that their own interests are (sensibly) the only thing they're focused on.
the irony is what prompted my mini-rant.
