The Homeric stories really work! Outside on the post-breakfast rounds, beneath the roar of airplanes and amid the rush of morning traffic, Monk can still get lost in the ancient lore, as Telemachus has it out with the suitors at public assembly. The primal ingredients that drive the stories resonate too well with Monk's primitive spirit.
The concern, now, is that Monk is inclined to leave the history books aside and give over his precious time to rereading and reading evermore these epic poems. But one expects the mood to pass. He has had this excited interest over this material before, including the hunger to read some background resource material, even reading such works: "Nature and Culture in the Iliad: The Tragedy of Hector" by James M. Redfield and "The Power of Thetis: Allusion and Interpretation in the Iliad" by Laura M. Slatkin.
I am just not sure if I want this to pass. There is even the thought that if the Republicans maintain one-party rule in Washington, I will give up on history and real life and stop wasting my time on them, and give my reading life over to these Homeric materials - maybe Shakespeare, too!
I do not know. I am over-stimulated. A little time may help sort out these mixed feelings.
