One of the big concerns that lurks in the background of these elections is the new use of these Republican voting machines that leave no paper trail. George Will discusses this in more general, less conspiratorial terms, with his dry and cutting wit:

Today's political climate -- hyperpartisanship leavened by paranoia and exploited by a national surplus of lawyers -- makes this an unpropitious moment for introducing new voting technologies that will be administered by poll workers who often are retirees for whom the task of working a DVD player is a severe challenge.

I wonder more about some of the darker, rather more conspiratorial concerns. If a number of close Congressional elections squeak out a Republican House in controversial votes administered by these machines, things could get real ugly, especially after all the recent controversies and questions, not the least of which being Jeb Bush's admnistering of the 2000 Florida vote. We need a little something to restore our faith.
