Of October Surprises

“Unless the Bush administration is keeping Osama bin Laden in a freezer somewhere, a majority of Americans will vote Democratic this year.”

-- Paul Krugman for The NY Times

Yeah, you always have to be mindful of these October surprises. In American politics, just about anything can and does happen, usually leading to Republican victories. It's a good time for Halloween!

Good discussion on CNN last night with the experts about how good Republicans are at turning out the vote. Complete with guides that tell workers just how likely a registered voter is to vote GOP given the car they drive, etc. with an 85% rate or better.

Which means Republicans can probably have a late jump and are doing better than advertised. 3-4 percentage points even. Of course, the problem is that the Democratic lead is often 7-9% which may mean even that drive won't help.

My fingers are crossed, buddy, but pulling for the Democrats is perhaps being a little like a Cubs fan. ;)
