They could have ignored the story, though. It's just that I imagine they would have avoided it in their early days, not wanting to take any risk offending their base, and now they are trying to expand their base. Just a thought that comes to mind.

No, they're solidifying their base. Remember that Bush signed the bill that keeps Phelps et al away from funerals not too long ago... a few weeks, maybe?
