monk222: (Noir Detective)

“You'd better give him another,” said the general. “He looks as though his nerves are a bit shaky.” I held out my glass for the refill.

“My nerves are just fine,” I said nursing my glass. “I just like to drink.”

“Part of the image, eh?”

“And what image would that be?”

“Why, the private detective of course. The shoddy little man in the barely furnished office, who drinks like a suicide who's lost his nerve, and who comes to the assistance of the beautiful but mysterious woman in black.”

-- Berlin Noir by Philip Kerr

This exchange has for me all the magic of that familiar James Bond bit. "Who are you?" "Bond... James Bond."

Monk fell in love with Mr. Kerr's A Philosophical Investigation years ago, a lifetime ago. So, he was only happy to try out Kerr's experiment to create a trilogy of the noir detective genre for the setting of Hitler's Germany. He does the macho detective bit with delightful and wicked verve, and it is an engaging touch to get this picture of people trying to carry on with their normal lives as their country is being more tightly clenched in Hitler's grip. It is a fun twist in the genre.

Kind of like professional research, huh? I love it. It's a fun read, particularly for fans of the noir detective.
