I suppose that Lawrence Block is a writer who is prolific in a Stephan King kind of way. Monk is not becoming a fan. Although he is happy to follow Block's lead into the dark alleys of the noir universe, the narrative is a bit too roughly and hamhandedly contrived even for the genre. The meanness and the passion are still there, though, along with the failed dreams and the losing.
