She turned and left. I watched her go - she had a good walk, just a step on the right side of whorishness, as much provocation as a woman could get away with without looking like a slut. I wondered how long it had taken her to learn to walk like that. Or if it was natural.

-- Grifter's Game by Lawrence Block

These are the questions that prey on men's minds.

I suppose that Lawrence Block is a writer who is prolific in a Stephan King kind of way. Monk is not becoming a fan. Although he is happy to follow Block's lead into the dark alleys of the noir universe, the narrative is a bit too roughly and hamhandedly contrived even for the genre. The meanness and the passion are still there, though, along with the failed dreams and the losing.

Too bad you're not liking him. I never read "Grifter's Game", but have read all (I think) of his Matthew Scudder books and his Hit Man books. His short stories are wonderful.

If you decide to give him another chance, try When the Sacred Ginmill Closes (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0380728257/ref=cm_lm_fullview_prod_6/103-4992412-8827852?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155). It's easily my favorite.

You've redeemed him for me. I actually love the Jeff Bridges, Rosanna Arquette movie, "Eight Million Ways to Die." And should I give Block another go, it may be with that one.

Thanks!

the bigger the ass, the more likely it is that the walk is entirely natural.

So, the sweeter the ass, the sweeter the walk? ;)

*grin* exactly like that. sadly for me , i was not blessed with an ass of any appreciable proportion [there's what , like 100 pounds of me] - but lucky for me , most of my chick friends have HUGE asses.. so i've watched a lot of swayin' hips in my day , and noted that ampleness is definitely a factor.
