WINDSOR, Ontario, Feb. 3 -- Five minutes from downtown Detroit, the countdown to Super Bowl debauchery has begun. Soon, fans will be carousing with escorts and nude dancers while smoking Cuban cigars and stuffing thousands of dollars worth of gambling tickets in their pockets. That mix could result in jail time in Detroit, where Super Bowl XL will be held Sunday. But just across the Detroit River, it won't draw a second look.
The people of this city are bracing for an onslaught of Super Bowl tourists, with the proximity to Detroit and Canada's more liberal entertainment laws providing an enticing combination. In Windsor, fans can find government-licensed prostitutes, all-nude strip clubs open almost around the clock and serving alcohol until 2 a.m., legalized Super Bowl gambling through the provincial lottery, a legal drinking age of 19 and no trade embargos on Cuban goods.

To think that we in America like to call ourselves the land of the free! By contrast, we can seem more like a big Taliban. Sure, we can still do everthing here, with the possible exception of readily savoring those vaunted Cuban cigars, as human nature is human nature, without regard to borders and politics, but to be able to enjoy the sweeter fruits of manhood without risk of peril in the open air of liberty must be truest freedom.
And I have not heard any whisper that the Conservative Harper is looking to reign in this spicy aspect of Canadian liberality.

But we do love our decent drinking age (18 and 19 in alternating provinces) and lack of Cuban embargoes.
If there's one thing I can safely assure you that Harper won't do, it's raise the drinking age. The tremendous outcry of 18-20 year olds across Canada would undoubtedly tip the electoral scales against him. Also, most people think 21 is a really silly age to be able to drink.

Date: 2006-02-04 09:26 pm (UTC)From:Prostitution is only legal in Canada if you consider it a legal loophole: more realistically, communicating for the purposes of prostitution is supposed to block it.
Other than that, it's not like it's Nevada. You can't just walk around hooking without having some fear of legal repercussion, nor is there any such thing as an advertised legal prostitute.
Escort services, though functionally the same, are different. But I'm pretty sure you guys have those too.
What I WILL grant you is that there is a certain "look the other way" philosophy amongst most law enforcement bodies and the public itself... as long as it isn't hurting anyone, people will pretend its not there (that's the Canadian way!).
Cops rarely make an effort to bust obvious prostitutes because the reality is that the girls will just be right back out on the street the next day... it's a waste of money. So most efforts to crack down on hooking usually focus on john busts than on prostitute arrests: in Winnipeg they tried out a system of publishing photographs of johns committing the crime (soliciting the hooker). It was hilarious for a little while.
As a side note, my province doesn't allow legal lap dances. :( We've always been quite miffed about that.
