On this morning's walk, Monk wondered how he used to do his little run and exercise. His muscles feel so hollow and weak that he cannot imagine doing much more than this walk. Such is the power of romantic promise, I suppose, when he was preparing for a marathon of mattress gymnastics with Meredith. Gotta love the cool mornings, though.
In the afternoon, Monk overhears Simple Tree talking with someone at the Falstaff house, perhaps Mrs. Falstaff. He suggests some jobs for Cain that he has come across in the newspaper, and he also talks about day labor, "work today, get paid today." Cain has lost his phone service.
During the call Tree says, "I don't have anything left." He says that he spent it all on Cain. One trusts that Tree is only showing a worse hand than he has, and that he has not really gone through all his credit cards.
Monk squirms in his room, as the air-conditioner sweetly hums this late into October.
