We took advantage of another Dish pay-per-view coupon, which is the network's consolation for a rate hike, choosing Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby. Both Monk and Simple Tree loved the movie. With boxing at its core, the movie took an unrelenting view of life as remorselessly hard and unrelievedly cold. This is a world view that we, as a culture, have apparently grown comfortable with, judging by the success of the picture.
Monk recalled when that movie became the target of Christian conservatives for its euthanasia scene in the end. They will not let up in their efforts to control everything that we see and read, trying to force their fairytale view of life on us. But we have perhaps gone too far beyond that for them to be entirely successful.
