“It's free today, brother.”

~
That is what the bus driver said putting his hand over the coin box, as Monk was reaching with his fare. A nice little treat! A simple fare costs about a buck these days.

Not having any idea why, Monk supposes that this is tied into Columbus Day. So, about five hundred years after the conquest, genocide and subjugation, we now get the recompense of free bus fare on the celebratory day.

Who says things don't work out in the end?!

xXx

You mean you didn't spend the whole day riding around on the buses when you found that out? ;-)

LOL The thought crossed my mind, but I'm like a fish out of water away from home and the Internet. :)

They are likely only to move on to new game. Neverending is the path of human progress. And I suspect that only the post office will continue to get the day off - the place to work for all your holiday benefits!

Thanks to the military for that ease with guns, with the post office being filled with veterans. Heh, maybe they should have more counselling as a job benefit, so that there will be fewer instances of postmen going 'postal.' Though, it occurs to me that we haven't had that lately.

Living in the largest city in the nation named after Chris "Hi, I'm lost" Columbus, there was an article in yesterday's paper about, gee why doesn't anybody celebrate with parades anymore. Well, the Italians still love him.

But eh, just be happy your bus fare is only a buck. They're talking about raising the L fare in Chicago to $2 (it was 1.50 when I was last there) and nobody is saying one word because it is better than the even bigger increase proposed last year before they went begging the state for a bailout.

The holiday is pretty much an afterthought, a sort of historic note. The real new world is cyberspace, though I suppose we'll never master mass transportation in this country.
