Although Monk no longer has live ambitions to write, he still has little story ideas from time to time. The snippet above comes from one in which he is the protagonist in a noir-detective story: Monk: Private Dick.

The cops got him downtown in one of those little torture interrogation rooms. They have been giving him some third-degree as a suspect on some murder rap. Monk just keeps playing it indifferently cool.

Eventually, the coppers get some info that clears Monk. Before letting him go, the lead cop asks Monk why he did not protest more. Monk says, "I said that I didn't do it."

"Yeah, yeah, but you weren't exactly passionate about it. That was one of the reasons I kept riding you. Why didn't you fight more!?"

"I didn't see the point," Monk cooly says. The copper looks only more puzzled. “People, you know,” Monk shrugs, “smarter than monkeys but still related.”
