Monk started listening to holiday music today. Well, it's only a once-a-year kind of thing, and it helps to make for a little variety, giving a little depth to the year.

To memorialize this turn, here is a nice wistful number by Stevie Wonder. It's nice to have a time of year when hope or faith may be revitalized a bit, a time to shed some of the cynicism and fatalism, a time to dream the dreams of innocence lost...

"Someday At Christmas"
by
Stevie Wonder

Someday at Christmas men won't be boys
Playing with bombs like kids play with toys
One warm December our hearts will see
A world where men are free

Someday at Christmas there'll be no wars
When we have learned what Christmas is for
When we have found what life's really worth
There'll be peace on earth

Someday all our dreams will come to be
Someday in a world where men are free
Maybe not in time for you and me
But someday at Christmastime

Someday at Christmas we'll see a Man
No hungry children, no empty hand
One happy morning people will share
Our world where people care

Someday at Christmas there'll be no tears
All men are equal and no men have fears
One shinning moment my heart ran away
From our world today

Someday all our dreams will come to be
Someday in a world where men are free
Maybe not in time for you and me
But someday at Christmastime

Someday at Christmas man will not fail
Take hope because your love will prevail
Someday a new world that we can start
With hope in every heart

Someday all our dreams will come to be
Someday in a world where men are free
Maybe not in time for you and me
But someday at Christmastime
Someday at Christmastime

Everyone complains about the Christmas nonsense (songs, movies on t.v., etc), but I really enjoy it. It's only once a year, as you said.

I think there is a certain charm to it - a certain cheer that even cuts through all the consumerism. It's nice.

It's an even prettier sounding song with some of that Stevie magic.

But I still sense a certain heavily laden cynicism in you. Relax and try to feel the spirit of Christmas - it's calling unto you. Maybe after the semester is finished...

No,no, I was serious, it is a nice song. I'd never heard it before, actually. It's hard for me not to be cynical about certain things this time of year, but there is plenty about it to enjoy, if you let it... and honestly I would rather enjoy it than make cynical wisecracks.

And so long as I don't try to listen to in constantly, it's pretty cool - too much can start to weigh on my nerves a bit. I also enjoy a certain communal spirit about it.

Good luck with all your work!
