Monk wakes up a little before six. A hard rain is falling and he cannot fall back asleep. He thinks about money.

Meredith is welcoming of his desire to visit her. When she speaks of him collecting disability, it is about getting the money to go to Florida for a couple of weeks. This could be a tactic to try to get him to seek help, but one doubts it (though we subsequently learn that this is actually more the case).

We are talking about at least five hundred dollars, and he has just over a hundred dollars. Monk even thinks about getting a job for the money, but that is presumably unrealistic. Feeling fairly confident that romantic feelings will not arise within Meredith to enflame her soul over his homely and tubby person, his motivation is also limited, though this is not to say that he does not want to visit her.

Beyond the frustration of knowing that he is not going to break out of his stunted, sexless life, he is concerned that he may lose what he has with Meredith. Unless he can keep the ball rolling, he fears that she is going to lose what interest she has in him. The situation is a little crazy - a taste of Real Life.
