Claire was captivated. She had never been treated quite like this before. Nor had she known an evening go so fast in ages. No coughs, no embarrassed silences while they fought for things to say, no sense that her companion regarded the meal as an irksome preliminary to a car ride and a bouncing bed. Rarer still, no impatience to get drunk so they might find each other funny. Three hours into their date, and they had already entered into a conspiracy: Claire and Paul on the inside, while all the world could only snub its nose against the windowpane, gaping at the flair with which they played the best and oldest game.

-- “A Journey Round a Darker Sun” by Simon Lowrie

My “Story of O” post put me in the mood to reread “Darker Sun”. Although you have to be a little pervy to enjoy it, I actually find it light in its sexual explicitness and nastiness. When I read erotica, I want wetter, nastier, rougher fare, something which better feeds my tortured id. My aging and the Internet have jaded me. Regardless, I am still enjoying the book, as it plays more deeply with the idea of sexual attraction and desire, and with what seems like an odd theme for a porn novel, what it is like to live in unrequited love.

Nevertheless, now that my grogginess has cleared, I have felt compelled to leave aside this fantasy fiction in favor of picking up meatier fare from the exalted world of higher literature, taking another turn through haunted Elsinore and the ill-fate of the melancholy Dane.
