I get up early Saturday morning, at around six, and I see that the polls are closing with Hillary holding onto the slimmest of leads with three more days to go. It's funny/odd to think that America could be poised to make a much more violent rightward lurch, with white nationalism becoming the key governing philosophy. Of course it could be said that this would amount to no more than a change of emphasis, as America has always been a white nationalist country in reality, but I think it is a profound emphasis, and that it makes a difference. ... ... Maybe that gold & white dog is problematic. I was out front getting the newspaper and reading a couple of old journal entries, when the dog rather seriously went after a jogger. I had an up-close view, and that dog looked to me like it was inclined to take a taste of that jogger. ... ... Pop called, and it's like my heart made a wish that came true. They are staying in Shiner for another day and won't be back until tomorrow. ... Now that I think about it, I am surprised that he had the empathy and courtesy to call and tell me, freeing me from the little strain of always expecting him to be pulling into the driveway, checking the window at every likely noise, a car door slammed shut, a car engine cutting off, a gate being opened. Victor probably pressed him to do it. ... ... Roger Cohen: "To give Trump his due, he recognized a moment when a lot of Americans under pressure, feeling menaced by modernity, were ready to reconnect with their inner reptile." [NYT] ... ... Daimon says, "Ah, 'Any Given Sunday' with Al Pacino! Not a bad piece of cinema." Yeah, it's been years and years since I last saw it, and it's definitely worth watching again and keeping in the collection. Oliver Stone really brought out the fun in football. It almost makes me feel like a kid again when I watch it. "I got a question for you. If you could only keep one movie, 'Any Given Sunday' or, or 'North Dallas 40', which would you keep?" Oooh, no, I couldn't do that. They are both great football movies, but they do different things, and I love the different things they do. "Okay, let me try this. How about if, in addition to those two movies, I throw in 'The Replacements' with Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman. If you had to throw out one, which would it be?" LOL 'The Replacements" is fun in its way, and I like the movie a lot -- "I know! You even bought the DVD." Well, I was really charmed by what they did with the cheerleaders. Nonetheless, that is an easy question - DVD or no DVD. I would just have to say goodbye to 'The Replacements'.
