Reading Life
Jul. 9th, 2016 08:33 pmHaving taken to reading my Little Golden Books while I eat sometimes, it occurred to me that I could diversify that a little, thanks to my Kindle. The key, after all, is that I only need one hand for the reading material, which among other things requires that the reading material be compact, as is the case with a Kindle.
I began with the resumption of the Iliad, but after a couple of stanzas, I realized that although I appreciate the work, it was not the best way to spend my time, considering what limited time I have to play with. I was pretty sure it would be the same thing with Milton's "Paradise Lost". I can think of only one writer who can make the most of such an opportunity. Shakespeare, of course. And what better play than "Hamlet". It's perfect. It brings you in right away. Of course, it helps to already know the material well, so that one can just dip in at any time for a few exchanges of dialogue or a quick soliloquy and then drop it again, and then pick it up a couple of days later for another quick dip. I find this also works beautifully when I feel deadly tired and must lie down for a bit, as I can doze for a few minutes, and then fire up the Kindle as I continue to lie in bed until my emotional-physiological batteries recharge sufficiently, happily losing myself in another scene of Denmarkian treachery and tragedy.
