Sunhee came by this morning, getting some more help with some paperwork, maybe about the health-financial problems of a family member. As she leaves, I am in the kitchen preparing my lunch, and she relates that the reason why she needs Pop's help is because of her lack of command over the English language. I was wondering what this could be about. Pop is not the kind of person from whom you seek administrative, technical help. You wouldn't want him doing your taxes for you. Indeed, his own command over the language is, at best, a little slippery itself. But this is an arrangement that they have, and I suppose it feeds Pop's ego that he can be a little lawyer-like with somebody.
Still, she must feel some kind of bond toward Pop. I'm sure she can get someone else to do this for her, someone who is more of a real friend, and perhaps a little more able. It's as though what she really wants is to remain in contact with him. This only began when her husband died, what ... a couple of years ago? I cannot recall who was the one Pop knew from his work days, whether it was her husband or her. She's very sociable. It's not as though she has trouble connecting with people. Why does she cling to Pop? He is obviously not that fond of her company, as I am sure she can tell. The question doesn't keep me up nights, but it's a bit of a mystery.
