When I got up at about 3:30 and went to switch rooms, I checked the patio and let in three hungry cats. When I opened the window in the big room, I was surprised to see that it had been raining - not a storm, but more than a drizzle. Since it was also cold, I kept them in, without suffering much struggle from them. Right now, it's a sunny morning turning a beautiful day. Only Ash remains indoors, dozing on the couch in the living room.

TV

My big debate this afternoon: "Gotham" or "Medium"? Or how about "West Wing"? I have a frozen pizza in the oven. The timer has ten minutes left on it. What to do, what to do? I almost forgot "Magic City". I've grown a little cool on it.

My Ass

Oww! Great, I am over my dry virus, but now I am suffering through a spell of diarrhea. My ass is sore from all the expelling and all the wiping. Well, at least they didn't fall at the same time, right? Though, I am wondering if that virus might not have been so dry, after all, merely finding another means of expelling itself from the body.

Pop is having his lunch of eggs just as I am ready for my little nap. The Cowboys have the evening game today. He has not said whether Lorie is coming over.

A break fell my way. Pop opted to eat in his office, listening to country music on his stereo. So, I was able to enjoy a good, deep nap, after all.

Movies

I've been watching more movies lately. For a while I enjoyed and took comfort in the regularity of the TV series and its fixed cast of characters. Now I find myself hungering for something more novel, a movie with its different rhythms and more varied expectations. I suppose this is a pendular thing, which helps to keep video-streaming fresh.

There has been an increase in the suicide rate for lower-class middle-age white people. Ross Douthat gives us some interesting discussion. This new trend seems to be tied in to the economic stagnation of the past decade, and Douthat notes that latinos and blacks have not suffered higher suicide rates. Aside from the unlikely possibility of new explosive economic growth and a more generous welfare state, he cheerily recommends that "maybe working-class white America needs to adapt culturally, in various ways, to this era of relative stagnation, and learn from the resilience of communities that are used to struggling in the shadow of elite neglect." That should be happily received by poor whites: you are losers and should just accept being like colored folks! Get to the back of the bus!
