When you have faith, who needs stinking facts? Despite their belief in God, the Republicans are clearly post-modern when it comes to truth.

I am jealous of those who think more deeply, who write better, who draw better, who ski better, who look better, who live better, who love better than I. I am sitting at my desk looking out at a bright antiseptic January day, with an icy wind whipping the sky into a white-and-blue froth. I can see Hopkins House, and the hairy black trees; I can see a girl bicycling along the gray road. I can see the sunlight slanting diagonally across the desk, catching on the iridescent filaments of nylon in the stockings I hung over the curtain rod to dry. I think I am worthwhile just because I have optical nerves and can try to put down what they perceive. What a fool!

The Sting

Gaaaw, something got me! A bee?

I was pruning the elephant ears for trash day. I reached in and grabbed a dying ear to cut it off and I felt the sting. I didn't see or hear anything and could have thought that it was a thorn, except that elephant ears do not have thorns.

I konw there has been a wasp or two playing around in the ears throughout most of the summer, but I cannot recall a clear experience of ever being stung by a wasp or a bee, so I could not tell if this was it. Thinking it was a bee, and knowing that bee stings pack some punch, I was afraid of what this bite or sting might become. Initially, it did not feel worse than an ant bite, but I was worrying that it wouldn't be long before my knuckle swelled up to the size of a baseball. I ran to the kitchen sink to run the sting under cold water, but it is not like a kitchen burn and did not start to feel better. Fortunately, the sting or bite never got much worse. Very livable. Maybe it was an ant.

To be sure, I would prefer that this never happened, but it didn't ruin my day either. Of course, the toxin could still be working in my body and I may not wake up tomorrow morning, but remain in bed waiting for someone to discover my cold breathless corpse. Just so you know why I might not be posting, at least once the scheduled pre-posted entries run out.

Well, it's nice to see that the Republican convention is well underway and the weather has held up for them.

When Lindsay Lohan got past her probabtion and the threat of jail, some people might have thought she would get back on track, having been so close to utter ruin. But it doesn't look that way. Some time ago, she was in a horrible car wreck when she was not supposed to be driving, and was lucky enough to walk away unharmed. And more recently, she was under heavy suspicion for stealing jewelry, again, and it looks like the only reason that the case wasn't pursued was because the owners were friends with Lindsay and did not want to be the cause of her legal trouble. And now she has been banned from a swaggy hotel for racking up $46,000 in unpaid bills. It is as though she is still trying to lead the life of a superstar when she hasn't done anything superstarry in a long time. One wonders, ten years from now, will she still be in the news and the gossip rags, or will she be safely buried in ignominious obscurity, or dead? I'd use this occasion to post a picture, but she really is not looking so hot these days.
