monk222: (Whatever)

The first casualty is the national community. Romney described a community yesterday. Observant Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, Jews and Muslims are inside that community. The nonobservant are not. There was not even a perfunctory sentence showing respect for the nonreligious. I’m assuming that Romney left that out in order to generate howls of outrage in the liberal press.

-- David Brooks for The New York Times

So, Mormons are cool, but atheists and agnostics are un-American and are probably only going to Hell anyway. I'm glad that I didn't catch the speech. These fundamentalist types usually just get under my skin. And the speech is apparently considered a big success, even Kennedyesque - uggh, I threw up a little in my mouth.

After all, as Randall Balmer points out, Kennedy also asserted the separation between church and states, whereas Romney obviously does not and would want to rule with his own soft brand of sharia, as do all other non-evolution believing fundamentalists.

"The Fall of the House of Bush: The Untold Story of How a Band of True Believers Seized the Executive Branch, Started the Iraq War, and Still Imperils America's Future" by Craig Unger

Okay, you can probably tell from the title alone that this book probably won't go down as the most coldly neutral analysis of Bush's policies, but I am still interested. It sounds like a widely encompassing account of these years and the main events. The Amazonians love it, though I suppose it is a pretty anti-Bush crowd, but aren't we all. Even conservatives are unhappy with the Administration. I think only the Christian fundamentalists are able to love this presidency, which explains a lot.

I come out of my nap and a session with "Fight Club" and catch on CNN how the story of the CIA destroying a couple of its interrogation tapes is catching fire, and then catch Romney saying that his big speech was not about politics. It's just a pure, Platonist speech on the importance of faith and having religion play an important part in the public square. What shit.

Why did I get up?

There's still a difference between being an icon of change and an agent of change. And there is a difference as well between being a fine philosopher king and a strong presidential challenger.

-- Ellen Goodman at RealClearPolitics.com

Ms. Goodman sounds one of the notes that concerns me about Obama. Is the man capable of more than high-sounding rhetoric and the pablum of unity? The Republicans are going to fight, and fight hard and dirty and mean. I think it would be horribly naive to imagine that you can stay above that like goody two-shoes. You'll find yourself in the emergency ward like a gang-rape victim.

I'd hate to see the Republicans turn Obama into another Rodney King. Not to mention the horror of seeing another fundamentalist Republican take the White House.

Alright! Christopher Hitchens has taken full aim at Romney and his pseudo-Kennedy speech and obliterated the performance. I don't suppose this takes away any of the political points that Romney scored yesterday, but I feel better, and isn't that what this blog is all about!

Ok, so you might not think that blogging is a health hazard but it’s not so much the act of blogging itself that can cause health problems - it’s more to do with the fact that sitting for hours on end in front of your computer blogging or reading blogs, can play havoc with your health.

But if I leave my computer the world could crash and die. The jihad could finally break through and end Western civiliztion as we know it. Christian fundamentalists might take over and turn us into the Church of Jesus. Or I could miss the newest celebrity sex tape.

I'm not like you. I'm not an ordinary person who can go about one's life carefree and at ease. I must man my command post! It is the life I chose so that you can go on with your lives. I have no regrets. I am here to serve.
