I don't suppose I have many Dick Cavett fans among my friends. I'm not such a fan that I even knew of the story of a guest that died on his show. Anyway, he tells that story today on his blog, and it is interesting and humanly perverse enough that I will share it.

SYDNEY, Australia

Almost everywhere you travel these days, people are talking about their weather — and how it has changed. Nowhere have I found this more true, though, than in Australia, where “the big dry,” a six-year record drought, has parched the Aussie breadbasket so severely that on April 19, Prime Minister John Howard actually asked the whole country to pray for rain. “I told people you have to pray for rain,” Mr. Howard remarked to me, adding, “I said it without a hint of irony.”

-- Thomas L. Friedman for The New York Times

So, that's where we've been getting our rain from. I dearly wish we could give some of it back.

Mr. Friedman relates how, in Australia, you can see more dramatically how influential climate politics has become, for liberals and conservatives alike.

Imus Sues

The old man has got some fight in him:

Radio host Don Imus is going to sue CBS for $120 million, according to a draft copy of the complaint obtained by ABC News' Law & Justice Unit.

The suit is expected to be filed next week.

A draft copy of Imus's lawsuit says that the network expected him to be controversial and irreverent under the terms of his contract. And he claims Imus's show was on a five second delay that allowed the network to censor him if they wanted.
NBC may have to realize that being on the cutting edge of Enlightenment sometimes costs. Well, higher morality shouldn't be easy but a challenge to the soul.

Paris is supposedly going to have to spend some time behind bars for a few weeks, and we are not talking about some kind of new, kinky relationship she is in, but jail - don't pass go, no fun, jail. Violating parole, driving with a suspended license, or something like that.

I guess it's a tribute to democracy that the famous, or notorious, Hilton heiress can be sent to the slammer. It's probably good for her, too, to learn that society's laws apply to her; otherwise, she might be more likely to kill herself someday.

Still, I think she might learn her lesson better if her sentence were commuted to, say, community service, sentenced to take Monk out on a weekend-long date and show him the time of his life and make him happy for a while, with permission for him to make a sex tape out of it and post it on his blog. Or would that be cruel and unusual punishment?

Whatever, I'm mainly posting this just to try out my new icon. It's been a while since I've gotten a new one. It's not exactly a romp in the limo with Paris, but it picks up Monk's mood a little.
