Monk wakes up a little before six. A hard rain is falling and he cannot fall back asleep. He thinks about money.

Meredith is welcoming of his desire to visit her. When she speaks of him collecting disability, it is about getting the money to go to Florida for a couple of weeks. This could be a tactic to try to get him to seek help, but one doubts it (though we subsequently learn that this is actually more the case).

We are talking about at least five hundred dollars, and he has just over a hundred dollars. Monk even thinks about getting a job for the money, but that is presumably unrealistic. Feeling fairly confident that romantic feelings will not arise within Meredith to enflame her soul over his homely and tubby person, his motivation is also limited, though this is not to say that he does not want to visit her.

Beyond the frustration of knowing that he is not going to break out of his stunted, sexless life, he is concerned that he may lose what he has with Meredith. Unless he can keep the ball rolling, he fears that she is going to lose what interest she has in him. The situation is a little crazy - a taste of Real Life.

Monk is happy to see that Meredith is still calling, and that she is still willing to engage in sexually playful talk, even as she maintaiins her seriousness about he claiming disability.

They are talking to each other over lunch, and she gets back at him for unwittingly trying to make her talk while she is eating. When he takes in a mouthful of burger, she delivers her coup de grace, "What if I crawled under the table and unzipped your pants with my teeth?" she says breathily - leaving him choking and spitting food.

Earlier, Monk had brought the terms of their discussion back to more intimate terms. While they are bargaining over whether he should try to get disability, he asks for compassion on her part should he visit her. She says that she is not ready for sex, and he asks for her to just let him hold her and try to make love to her.

She says she might. She also argues, "Short-time lovers, long-time friends." Monk denies that this would be the case with them, saying that they are not kids anymore. She says, "You might get possessive." He answers, "I'm too broken for that." He argues that they could continue to be friends, pleading that he wants to know what it is to make love with a real girlfriend. She says she might - provided that he gets disability.

Monk is not so deluded that he believes his wishes will come through for him, but he does forego his afternoon snack of lemon meringue pie and coke. He is not messing with his dick so much. He pictures himself taking up jogging. "She says she might."

John is late in arriving at Meredith's with the Church's Fried Chicken. She calls Monk just as he is taking his TV dinner out of the oven. When he learns that she is watching a Law & Order marathon on the USA channel, Monk finds the station on his TV so that they may be in sync. It is a pleasant surprise that it is a Special Victims marathon.

As a court scene plays on TV, she tells him to go back and finish law school. Monk was just taking this as some more of their 'disability' discussion, until she drops her emotional bomb, "I'll marry you if you go back and finish law school."

Monk is stunned and subdued, the way she is playing upon his dreams, "You'll marry me if I go back to law school?" Not so fast! She says that he needs to complete law school. Ah, of course.

He says that would take three years. She says, "I won't be ready for the old folks' home yet." Still stunned, he says, "No... but you can back out." As they begin to dig into the subject, she says that John is arriving and that she has to go.

Rationally, Monk understands that it would be foolish to take this too seriously. And even if she were serious, he hardly would be able to succeed now when he could not do so when he was in his academic prime. Ratioanality aside, he wants to tell her that he would try anything as best he can if she would marry him, or even just be his girlfriend and lover, but this is to take things too seriously and to cast reality aside - yet, so close to the fantasy...
