As inflection points go, the Consumer Electronics Show that kicked off yesterday couldn't be sending a clearer signal: The era of the personal computer is drawing to a close. For an industry gathering that once showcased each new generation of desktop and laptop, this year's show is buzzing with every imaginable flavor of tablet, smart phone and mobile appliance. Welcome to the age of mobile computing.

-- Mike Malone and Tom Hayes for The Wall Street Journal

I never even got into the laptop thing, though Father has flirted seriously with the idea. I don’t even know what an iPod looks like, and I have barely heard of tablets and probably wouldn’t even know one if I stepped on it.

I am not a very mobile person, and my big ole personal computer is good enough for me, especially since I used to believe that even this would be a bridge too far. And free rape-porn to boot! I should not be heard to complain, as technology has been good to me, even going a long way to make up for the poverty of my natural circumstances. My access to the Internet need not be mobile for that.
