Smooth-faced again. Hmm, that was a lot easier this time around. Is the trimmer better on these new razors that Father bought, or did I finally stumble on how to use it correctly? Not a single ouchie, and pretty quick, too, just zip, zip, zip. I can even dispense with the scissors altogether. And I am left with the lukewarm joy of seeing another face in the mirror, not a particularly better-looking face really, but different, and I still find it a little rejuvenating, even if the hair keeps getting greyer every year, and the face softer, more beaten down. Time is a little cruel and remorseless, and everyone has to be a bit of the philosopher.
Well, we are well into September, and with the cooler weather that these hard storms ushered in, it seemed like a good idea to lose the beard and ‘stache and get ready for the library season. The next big, stress-filled step is my big annual haircut, and then we are set, as we just wait for a little cool front to launch my first trip downtown and hit the mean streets. Which is always a little exciting for me, like the first day of school after the long summer vacation.
This year, though, I am less interested in the free books than I am in the chicken fried rice. I am more set on what I want to read, and I’m not as interested in going pot luck with what is available on the library shelves. I only hope that my Asian restaurant is still in business. It always seems to be just hanging on by the skin of its chopsticks, and just one bad summer could bring it down. It is too far away from the popular tourist haunts - a place after my own heart, as well as my stomach.
I’m looking forward to getting back in the groove. It is good to leave the house every once in a while and feel the hum of all that life out there. Reality isn’t all virtual and pixelated. It’s a little scary, but in small doses, it can be refreshing - like a brush with danger.
