monk222: (Flight)
~
We said goodbye. I watched the cab out of sight. I went back up the steps and into the bedroom and pulled the bed to pieces and remade it. There was a long dark hair on one of the pillows. There was a lump of lead at the pit of my stomach.

The French have a phrase for it. The bastards have a phrase for everything and they are always right.

To say goodbye is to die a little.

-- The Long Goodbye

Sometimes it can feel that way when you finish a good book, too. And so it is with this novel.

Monk isn't sure which he likes better, this one or The Big Sleep. The plot gets perhaps a little more convoluted and unlikely in The Long Goodbye, but we enjoy a deeper look into the background of Philip Marlowe in this Chandler offering as well. Suffice it to say that both novels are on Monk's list of re-readables, for when he needs a warm and friendly place to hideaway in for a while.
