I cannot recall any serious resignation drama anent Rumsfeld. Though, secretaries are known to perfunctorily hand in resignations in the face of political unrest, in deference to the president, and to save face by not making the president fire them, with the resignations often not being accepted. And it has been my understanding that upon winning a second term, all secretaries hand in their resignations to the president before the second term begins, giving the presdient an entirely free hand to make what changes he wishes, with the president usually refusing to accept the resignations.
