monk222: (No!)

Monk caught a little bit of Senator Kerry's wife speaking on C-SPAN today, evidently campaigning to the liberal Democratic base. She was talking about the evils of discrimination and unequal opportunity, and Monk was in one of his moods so that this grates on his nerves - like a rich Heinz heir gives a fuck about the downtrodden!

Monk cynically thinks about how fortunate it is for the Democrats that they will always be able to play this organ-grinder music, just as it has always been played by those who scam the people. We surely don't have to worry about these problems of inequality ever being solved - even with liberals and progressive in power.

Monk thinks about how at least Republicans, until recently, didn't even pretend to care about the losers. At least that is honest. Though, today, even Republicans put on a conerned face for the downtrodden - compassionate conservatism. And it is even more ridiculous coming from them.

You may have been in one of your moods, but it's worth remembering that Heinz-Kerry has spent most of the years since her first husband's death working as a philanthropist... she actually turned down Republican requests to run for his Senate seat.

It may still seem vague and disingenuous to you, but essentially her whole career has been giving away money to try and make a difference (Heinz Foundation amounts to $1.5 billion dollars), and she's won the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian award. Prior to that, she had worked for the United Nations. Teresa Heinz-Kerry is a most unique woman.

Some more quotes about her from a recent People profile: (http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/clips/news_2004_0430a.html)

"The daughter of Jose' Simoes-Ferreira, a Portuguese oncologist, and Irene Thierstein, a homemaker, she was born to privilege in her dirt-poor homeland. "[But] money is not intrinsic to who she is," says Chris, who left his job in finance to work for his stepfather's campaign. Educated in Catholic schools, she developed a social conscience early in life. "I grew up under a dictatorship," she tells supporters. "America was everything I didn't have--optimistic, generous of heart, tolerant." In the '50s she marched against apartheid while in college in South Africa and, at 24, left Africa to study to be an interpreter in Geneva, where she met Heinz, then working at a Swiss bank."

Though, it does remind me of how someone on my friends list recently said that democracy in America hasn't been ruined by the right, but by the rich.

Well, I'm glad that my mood has brought out this material on Heinz-Kerry, being a lazy researcher at best, myself. I lean towards the belief that there is a significant difference, especially when the Right is as influenced by these fundamentalists as they are. Though, I have to chuckle that the Repbulicans would've been happy with her.

I want Kerry to win, too. I don't know if this (http://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/article_4636.shtml) is a reliable site, but it captures some of what I fear about Bush. I think Bush is over his head in the presidency, and our country and world really need him out.

I just have moods, too...

As a second sidenote, it's interesting to note that her father was the first oncologist in Mozambique.

I highly suggest reading more about Teresa. Her life and causes really have been fascinating... she is a rare woman indeed. The hilarious thing is the quotes from Republicans trying to paint her as "not gracious enough for politics," meaning of course, she's not subservient and muzzled enough to be a First Lady. It's how they'll be trying to paint her, but most accounts I've read by women who've met her say that in her blithe brilliance, she charms other women most of all.

As for that site, I hope to god it isn't that accurate, but it would explain much.
