BEIRUT, Lebanon — As the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad’s government grinds on with no resolution in sight, Syrians involved in the armed struggle say it is becoming more radicalized: homegrown Muslim jihadists, as well as small groups of fighters from Al Qaeda, are taking a more prominent role and demanding a say in running the resistance.
As bad as Americans and Westerners may want to topple Assad, we see again that the other side is not really looking that good to our interests. And thus the whole Arab spring. There's just no winning, and that goes for the common people of these countries, because in the long run a deeper fall into the medievalist dark ages is no positive answer to their needs and aspirations. The Middle East is like a dark hole that promises to suck in and swallow the rest of us.
