Blatty vs. Georgetown

Wow, the author of "The Exorcist", which we read not so long ago, William Peter Blatty, is spearheading the effort to strip Georgetown University of its right to call itself Catholic or Jesuit. Why? because the University is not doing enough against abortion. The impetus seems to be an invitation to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to be a speaker at commencement, who is pro-choice and the author of the contraceptive mandate that enforces Catholic hospitals to pay for women's reproductive health services.

Mr. Blatty writes:

“Many believe that to make Georgetown truly Catholic is to turn back the clock hands and somehow limit its very nature as a university, as if the notion of ‘Catholic’ and ‘university’ are new to each other, or inherently at odds. On the contrary, to make Georgetown ‘Catholic’ is to move the clock forward; it is to make the University better than it now is! Of course, there are always those who are afraid of change—who lack vision. They may need to step aside.”

Personally speaking, notwitstanding Blatty's curious attempt to flip the poles on 'forward' and 'backward', I would prefer to see the Catholic Church more interested in being Christian rather than medieval with a taste for oppression, with its peculiar relish for the idea of cornering women into having babies, but that does not seem to be the way they are going. The Catholic Church is making itself increasingly irrelevant in the West.
