In a statement that was read to reporters, Rushdie said that he’d received information from intelligence sources that “paid assassins from the Mumbai underworld may be on their way to Jaipur to ‘eliminate’ me.”

Salman Rushdie had to back out of the literary festival in India. The writing life has not been all fame and fortune for him. A little touch of the medieval still lives with us.
While on the subject, it occurs to me that Rushdie is one person who I have not heard speak out on Christopher Hitchens's death. I understand they were genuinely good friends. Maybe I just missed it.
